How to have a safe & fun time in the Quarter

Taken from the SCaRE 05 program, with a few updates added by myself

1. Stay in groups of 2 or more.

2. Remain in fairly well lit areas after dark.

3. If it looks unsavory, ignore it and keep on walking.

4. Please remember there are individuals in the Quarter that make their living preying upon tourists.

  • To expand upon this subject - Avoid the "Where ya got ya shoes" scam people at all costs,

they will walk up to you and say, "I Bet I can tell ya, where ya got shoes", they will then proceed to offer to shine your shoes for free if they can't guess "where ya got your shoes" Most people will then take the bet and let them start shining their shoes. Btw, I have no idea what the stuff is in the bottle of stuff that they use. Anyway after their long speech, people normally spout off the name of the shop where they had bought their shoes, thinking there would be no way for this guy to know. Well, these people are wrong. The correct answer is "I got my shoes on my feet on (insert name of street you are on)"

What ever you do, do not try to stiff these people if they get you. For they usually have very large friends close by.

5. Leave your purses and wallets in your hotel room. Carry your ID, cash, or credit cards in a front pocket and split cash up into small amounts preferably small bills. Do not pull out a huge wad of cash or large bills at any time. (See #4)

6. If asked by a member of security at one of the establishments to follow them or leave, do so in a calm manner. You may think that you have done nothing wrong, but there are alot of other places in the Quarter, find another one to have fun in rather than cause a scene.

7. Do not display your Convention Badge while in the Quarter. This will instantly mark you as a tourist. (Please see #4)

8. There are some clubs on Bourbon street with a Dress Code. Yes a dress code exists on Bourbon St. The following is a suggestion to ensure you meet or exceed the strictest Dress Code enforced.

  • Jeans, Polo shirt or T-shirt with a visible logo or writing. As for head gear...do

not wear bandannas or Do-Rags, if it looks like a normal cap/hat you should be fine. Finally ALWAYS have your shoes on. I know that one seems a little odd, but it is not only a Dress Code concern, it is also a health concern as well.

9. Do not, for any reason, try to visit the cemeteries after dark. They are closed and locked up tight. They are also next to the Projects. It is fine over there during the day, but very dangerous at night.
